A Community Led Effort

Having a dog park in our town would enhance community interactions, and would prove invaluable to the health and well-being of the dogs who would benefit from this."

Our Story

Peterborough is a town of nearly 6,000 residents — and a remarkable number of dogs — yet there is currently no designated space where dogs can safely play off-leash or socialize with one another. Our Town Dog Park began as a grassroots effort by local residents who believe that dogs make communities healthier, more connected, and more joyful.

A dog park would provide a secure, thoughtfully designed space where dogs can run freely, practice good manners, build confidence, and burn off energy — while their owners meet neighbors, form friendships, and strengthen community ties.

The idea of a dog park in Peterborough has been discussed for years. With more than 1,500 registered dogs and no designated off-leash area, many residents have asked the same practical question: how can we create a safe place for dogs to run while respecting our town and its land?

In response, a group of local residents began working with the Peterborough Recreation Committee to explore options, learn from other communities, and listen carefully to local input. We are still in the planning phase — evaluating possibilities, gathering feedback, and laying the groundwork needed to move forward thoughtfully and responsibly.

This effort reflects a long-term investment in community well-being — one that will rely on collaboration, care, and generous support from those who believe in creating lasting public spaces.

Our Mission

This park will be shaped through collaboration, care, and respect for the place we all share. Our mission is to create a thoughtfully planned, community-supported dog park that benefits dogs, residents, and the Town of Peterborough. We are committed to a process that values safety, accessibility, environmental stewardship, and transparency — and to building a space that reflects the needs and values of our community.

Why this matters

A well-designed dog park is more than a recreational amenity. It supports healthy dogs, strengthens social connection, protects sensitive land, and gives residents a shared space to gather and care for together. When done well, it becomes a long-term community asset.
